About us

Every four minutes a household in England became homeless in the last year.

This winter, children will be spending Christmas in damp storage containers, badly converted office blocks and cramped B&Bs.

Families will be sleeping on sofas, staying with friends and relations, with no permanent place to call home. People will be sleeping in freezing cars, damp tents and dirty doorways.

Our message is clear: this is not a home.

What we do

Emergency helpline

Over the past year, over 22,000 households received advice from our emergency helpline.

Fighting for social housing

We’re fighting to give safe, secure homes to all. Within ten years, we want to make sure that everyone who needs social housing gets it.

Face-to-face support

In 2021, more than 18,000 households came to our hubs for face-to-face advice and support.

Campaigning against discrimination

We’re campaigning to end housing benefit discrimination. Last July, we even won a game-changing court case confirming it was unlawful.

“Christmas in the hostel was very hard”

Lisa and her children became homeless after a relationship breakdown. The family were forced to stay in unsuitable temporary accommodation, sharing a kitchen with ten other families.

Shelter and a solicitor helped find Lisa and her family a more suitable place to live. In July 2022, Lisa and her children finally moved into social housing.

“Shelter helped so much. When I was talking to an advisor from Shelter, she’d talk to me, give me advice on what I could do, she lifted my spirits. I could say anything to her, and she didn’t judge.”
