Terms and conditions

These terms and conditions govern your participation In Walk for Home (the event).  All events are organised by Shelter, a registered charity in England, Wales & Northen Ireland. Registered charity 263710, registered address 88 Old Street, London, EC1V 9HU.  

By registering for the event, you are agreeing to the below terms and conditions. Participants of Walk for Home should read this document carefully before registering to participate in the event.   

Participant registration

  1. All persons wishing to participate in the event aged 18+ must register individually.  All persons under the age of 18 can attend the event with a suitable adult and do not need to register. We recommend a ratio of one adult to four children maximum. Participants may be required to provide proof of age at the event.
  2. Multiple registrations under an email address will not be recognised.  
  3. You may not transfer your place to another person. 
  4. Entry fees for the Walk for Home events are as set out on the Walk for Home website at the time of purchase. We may offer discounts from time to time. The registration fee contributes towards the costs of hosting the event.  
  5. Event entry will close when the maximum participant capacity is reached, or on the event date – whichever occurs first.  
  6. You acknowledge any registration fee you have paid is non-refundable, non-transferrable, and cannot be used towards your sponsorship pledge. 

Data protection

  1. You acknowledge that you will be contacted by email, phone, SMS and post in relation to the event you have registered for, ensuring Shelter can deliver the necessary administrative and event-related communications required to complete your successful participation and fundraising for the event. This will include communications about: (a) Access to our Shelter event Facebook groups; (b) Fundraising advice and tips; (c) Information about how money raised by supporters is spent by Shelter; and (d) Links to online Shelter content relevant to your participation in the event. 
  2. Your personal data will be processed in accordance with Shelter's privacy policy. You acknowledge that Shelter will share your contact details with Geiger, our merchandise supplier, who will use them to post your bobble hat to your address where required.   We will never share your data with any other third parties, unless you agree. 
  3. You acknowledge that any photography or film footage taken as part of your participation in the event can be used for promotional and marketing purposes for this specific event and any future Shelter events activity, including but not limited to promotion on Shelter’s and third-party websites, social media, television broadcasting, in online and print media publications and other marketing materials. If you do not wish for your image to be used in this way, please contact the Community Events Team using the details below. Shelter will not identify a participant by name without their written agreement. 

Fundraising and donations

  1. You acknowledge this is a fundraising event and if you’ve paid a registration fee you commit to raising the minimum sponsorship pledge as advertised on the Shelter event webpage, excluding any Gift Aid. 
  2. When fundraising, you will act lawfully and follow any fundraising guidelines provided by Shelter. You must make it clear you are fundraising in 'aid of Shelter' and are not representing that you are raising funds on behalf of Shelter. You must not put undue pressure on people to sponsor you or do anything that may harm the reputation of Shelter or act in a manner contrary to our values. 
  3. For any independent fundraising events that you carry out to raise funds (for example a cake sale or pub quiz), you acknowledge that you are carrying such events out in your own capacity. It's your responsibility to organise all aspects of such event and make it clear that such event is run by you 'in aid of' Shelter and is not run by Shelter. You also agree to make it clear that such event is not 'on behalf of Shelter' and that Shelter will not accept any responsibility or liability for such event. If you wish to use Shelter's logo, please contact the Shelter Community Events Team who can provide an 'in aid of' logo. 
  4. You agree to ensure any required permissions or licences are obtained from the local authority or other relevant bodies, and permission is sought to use private property where required. You acknowledge you are responsible for obtaining any such licence and permission and this is not the responsibility of Shelter. You also agree to comply with all relevant health and safety, food or drink, alcohol and gambling legislation and regulations. You acknowledge that Shelter is unable to provide insurance for fundraising activity, and that you are responsible for securing appropriate insurance cover if required for your fundraising activity. 
  5. If you must withdraw prior to the event, you must notify Shelter immediately and before the registration deadline if possible.  If you choose not to participate in the event or fail to complete the event for any reason all donations collected will still be payable to Shelter.  
  6. You agree to ensure any cheques relating to your sponsorship are made payable to Shelter and sent to the Shelter Community & Events Team with the event name, your full name, and address. 
  7. You agree to send all sponsorship funds collected or raised to Shelter no later than six weeks after the event. If sponsorship money was given on the condition, you complete the event, and the event is cancelled, or you do not complete the event, then you must contact donors and ask if they are still happy for sponsorship monies to go Shelter. If they do not wish for their sponsorship money to go to Shelter in this circumstance, then the donation must be refunded to the relevant donors. Any requests for the charity to return any fundraising to the donor must be made by emailing walkforhome@shelter.org.uk. If the sponsorship money was given without any conditions attached, and the event is cancelled, or you do not complete the event, the money should be paid to Shelter and there is no obligation to contact or confirm this with donors. 
  8. For each registered participant in the organise your own event, a bobble hat will be provided and sent via second class post once you have raised £20 and haven’t opted out of receiving one. For each registered participant taking part in an organised walk, a bobble hat will be provided on the day of the event. 
  9. If using social media to promote your participation, or at the event, such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter or any such site or social media platform, you shall not post content that is unlawful, and you must agree to delete any content we reasonably consider to be in breach of this condition.  

Event conduct

  1. We respectfully ask that all participants do not drop litter at the event, be respectful of the local community and residents and refrain from using smoking products and the consumption of alcohol or illegal substances at the event.  
  2. Dogs are allowed at the events unless otherwise specified on the event website. Dogs are the responsibility of the owner and must be always kept on leads.  
  3. We require that all   participants be respectful, not use aggressive or abusive language towards other participants in any forum, or event staff and members of the public.  We reserve the right to remove participants from the event if they do not adhere to these rules, and no refunds shall be given in these circumstances.  
  4. Participants must arrive at the required start time, and should you wish to make any changes to your start time you must notify Shelter as soon as possible – we cannot guarantee all requests. For safety reasons it is possible that latecomers will not be permitted to take part in the event.  
  5. The event is a non-competitive walk, the route has been thoroughly risk assessed for walking activity only and to participate by other methods such as cycling is not permitted. Should you participate by other means, you do so entirely at your own risk and will not be classed as a participant in the event and absolve Shelter of any responsibility.  

Accessibility, health and safety

All participants and spectators attend and enter the event entirely at their own risk. We shall not be liable for any injury or loss to persons or their property that might occur as a result of your or their participation in or attendance at the event, other than in respect of any injury or loss arising as a result of our negligence. For the avoidance of doubt, nothing in this clause shall exclude or limit our liability for any liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law 

  1. The event which you are registering for is physically challenging and may pose a risk of discomfort, illness, injury, and even death. You need to be satisfied that you are physically capable of doing the event without undue risk to your health or life. We do not conduct health or fitness checks on entrants and the responsibility for your ability to participate in the event is solely with you as the participant. 
  2. If you have a medical condition or are unsure of your physical ability to take part in the event, you must seek medical advice from a general practitioner prior to participating in the event. 
  3. In the event of medical emergency please call 999.  
  4. We aim to be as inclusive as possible, ensuring we have an event set-up suitable for all ages and abilities and we aim to have at least one wheelchair and pushchair accessible route at each event. Details on the route, route terrain and accessibility will be available on the event website.  
  5. We reserve the right to reduce or alter event routes due to any unforeseen circumstance. It is your responsibility to notify Shelter of any special access requirements you may need at the event.  
  6. Event routes will be marshalled by event staff; however, participants remain responsible for navigating themselves from start to finish using the route map provided.  
  7. You agree to adhere to the Highway Code when on public roads and pathways, all traffic signals and road signs must be obeyed. 
  8. If the event is delayed or cancelled due to reasons beyond our control, we will make all reasonable attempts to reschedule the event, but this cannot be guaranteed. Refunds will be offered should the event be cancelled on all registration fees, or you can donate your registration fee to Shelter. 
  9. Walk for Home will be delivered in line with government guidelines for COVID-19. These are subject to change at any time and Shelter cannot be held accountable for any changes to the event as a result. Due to the continued impact of COVID-19, additional rules may be implemented on the day of the event to ensure the safety of all persons. 
  10. We request that participants take their own personal responsibility and do not attend the event if you are feeling unwell.  
  11. We reserve the right to shut down the event course and the event area after an appropriate amount of time has passed from the start to the event – approx. 3.5 hours after the last start time. Any participant who has not finished the event by this time but chooses to continue do so at their own risk with the understanding that they are no longer considered a participant of the event, and they absolve Shelter of any and all responsibility.
